I can remember being awakened from a nap – I love naps by the way – by my wife Missy one late afternoon. I remember distinctly her words, ” We’re going to have a baby!” Still groggy, and wiping my eyes I was sure she was probably kidding. This news was being shared with me on April 1st after all! I kept waiting for her to say ” April Fools!-just kidding!” and then laugh. But she didn’t say that. So, after having her swear on a bible, it finally began sinking in! I was going to be a father!
While I always had been one to plan, this news was a key trigger inspiring me to get serious about planning for our future as parents. We assured each other that a kid wouldn’t hold us back in life or keep us from our dreams. Now, you may think I wasn’t excited, but you’d be wrong I was thrilled at this news. What made it even more exciting is that both of us decided to wait for the birth to know the sex of the baby! Today, many soon to be parents can’t wait to know this so they can get the baby’s room decorated, get clothes and toys, etc…which in itself does require a lot of planning. Well, I had an idea on how to solve the nursery design that Missy liked to solve the challenge of not knowing the sex of the baby beforehand.
We decorated the nursery with the theme of Winnie the Pooh’s Hundred Acre Woods. Using light blues, greens, light browns and touches of yellows and pinks, I painted an enchanting scene from floor to ceiling around the room! With this design and color scheme we would be ready either way for our first bundle of joy! And we able to experience months of anticipation, including brainstorming names for both girls and boys, choosing toys and clothing styles that would work for our newborn!
And another great thing was when our second child came along I simply, hammered – I mean painted – a new sign with Emma’s name on it on the room wall!
